Dropout risk rises for child immigrants over 9: Study

Lorna Rivera’s two sons moved to Canada from the Philippines at the same time, in December.

While it took eight-year-old Phillip no time at all to adjust to his Grade 2 class at Saint Elizabeth Catholic School, it has been a different story for 16-year-old Rencis at Bishop Marrocco Catholic Secondary School.


“My younger one is learning so quickly, but the older one doesn’t even want to go to school,” said Rivera.


The Toronto mother has every reason to be concerned.


According to a Statistics Canada study, the chance of immigrant children dropping out of high school rises the older they are when they arrive here.


“More important to their success is how old they (are when they) come, not where they come from,” said author Miles Corak, an economist with the University of Ottawa’s graduate school of public and international affairs.
