CALGARY — A judge in Calgary is expected to rule on Friday whether a Guatemalan accused of war crimes can be sent back to the U.S.
Jorge Vinicio Orantes Sosa -- a 53-year-old Canadian and American citizen -- was recently arrested in Lethbridge, Alberta.
He is accused of lying to American immigration authorities about whether he had committed a crime when he applied for U.S. citizenship.
Sosa is wanted in Guatemala for his alleged involvement in attacks on a village where more than 200 people were massacred in 1982.
Court heard yesterday that Sosa used a sledgehammer to kill unarmed villagers during a civil war and threw their bodies down a well.
A federal lawyer says the hearing is not a criminal trial and the allegations haven't been proven.
The extradition hearing simply needs to determine whether there is enough evidence to warrant a trial.
Sosa's lawyer says the key is to determine if his client committed perjury.
